Julian Menrath
What instrument(s) do you play, and how long have you been studying music?
Electric guitar is my main instrument, along with vocals and a bit of acoustic guitar, bass guitar and drums on the side. I also enjoy playing around on the piano and harmonica at home. I’ve been having electric guitar lessons at Tempo Allegro since I was 8 years old and started vocal lessons a few years ago, around age 14.
What inspired you to start playing music?
It was my parents who first encouraged me to learn an instrument and suggested trying guitar lessons as they thought this instrument would suit my personality. I quickly began playing easy versions of my favourite rock songs and this kept me motivated. And after finding out my primary school had its own rock band, it motivated me to keep practicing so that I could join. And of course, watching the movie School of Rock!
What do you enjoy most about your lessons with your teacher/s at Tempo Allegro?
I love the way my teachers tailor the lessons specifically to my needs and always give 100% to helping me. This could be preparing for a AMEB exam, a random song that I need to quickly get ready for an upcoming performance or I may just have a cool riff that I want to develop, and they will always be equally enthusiastic to make it happen.
What’s been your proudest musical achievement so far?
Probably just how far I've come as a performer, particularly with my singing. I used to be terrified to even go near a mic, but now I'm confidently fronting bands and have even ventured into doing some solo performances like open mic gigs.
What’s your favourite song to play, and why?
My favourite rock band song to play is Vampire Money by My Chemical Romance. We’ve been playing it for years at nearly every performance and it’s still just as energetic and chaotic as ever. As for something solo, probably Pool House by The Backseat Lovers. It's just an incredible song that I can really put my whole soul into every time I sing it.
What advice would you give to new music students?
Throw yourself into every corner of music, and don't be afraid to try new things. I used to only involve myself with rock music but now I've played in jazz bands, been a Pep band drummer and composed electronic music for my mate's videogame, and all of it has made me a better, more well-rounded musician.
What’s next for you in your music journey?
I’m planning to study music at QUT next year and hoping I’ll meet some like-minded musicians to form a band and finally get my pile of half-finished songs out into the world.
